Another redirection service for dynamic jr. skulkers

http://www.selfhost.com

http://www.selfhost.com/ht_games.asp

The 2/18/00 issue of WebSkulker mentioned three redirection services that let a jr. skulker with a dynamic IP address run servers of different types.  Jr. Skulker Chris Gray told us about a fourth one, selfhost.com, that seems much more skulker-friendly than the others and also adds an "answering machine" feature and an instant messenger.  Go to the selfhost page and register with them.  This will create a virtual web site on their machine called "yourname.selfhost.com".  Anyone going to that web page, or trying to contact that address in NetMeeting, an online game, or anything else, will be redirected over to your current IP address.  To make this work, whenever you are online and want people to find you, leave a particular page of theirs running in a web browser.  That page will run your choice of a Java or JavaScript program that communicates with their server to tell them your current IP address.

If you are having trouble understanding the concept and what this site can do for you, go to the second link above.  It is a detailed tutorial with screen shots.

If someone tries to browse "yourname.selfhost.com" when you are not online, they will get a page from selfhost that says you are offline, displays a personal greeting that you wrote, and invites them to leave a message in a form which will be sent to you by email.

This is the home page for Dr. Drew, co-host of the MTV (and formerly radio) show Loveline.  "In October, Dr. Drew and his childhood friend and fellow Amherst grad, Curtis Giesen, launched drDrew.com, a lifestyle online community for 14- to 24-year-olds.The Internet is the logical medium for Dr. Drew to communicate with young adults. The site is rich with content and features live Webcasts twice a week, chat rooms, forums, exclusive celebrity interviews, home pages, user polls, instant messaging, buddy lists, and movie, album and book reviews, as well as great information on relationships, sex, and health issues."

The second link is for the free gift they are offering to mail to new subscribers, and you can get even more by referring subscribers to them!

Skulking quacks of old

"In a time when X-rays were used to treat common illness and Radium water was as popular as Perrier... Before electric outlets and electric toasters there were coils that could transmit electricity without wires -- light bulbs that were powered by radio waves -- and hundreds of medical electrotherapy devices - most of them are practically unknown today-- but were vital to the development of future electrical, medical, and scientific apparatus----many have yet to be utilized to their fullest potential - and many are pure quackery at it's best!"

This made WebSkulker laugh

A team of archaeologists was excavating in Israel when they came upon a cave. Written across the wall of the cave were the following symbols, in this order of appearance: A woman, a donkey, a shovel, a fish, and a Star of David.

They decided that this was at least three thousand years old. They chopped out the piece of stone and had it brought to the museum where archaeologists from all over the world came to study the ancient symbols. They held a huge meeting after months of conferences to discuss the meaning of the markings.

The President of the society stood up and pointed at the first drawing and said: "This looks like a woman. We can judge that this race was family oriented and held women in high esteem. You can also tell they were intelligent, as the next symbol resembles a donkey, so, they were smart enough to have animals help them till the soil. The next drawing looks like a shovel of some sort, which means they even had tools to help them. Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish which means that if a famine had hit the earth, whereby the food didn't grow, they would take to the sea for food. The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrews."

The audience applauded enthusiastically. Suddenly a little old man stood up in the back of the room and said, "Idiots! Hebrew is read from right to left. It says: 'Holy Mackerel, dig the ass on that woman.'"
