WebSkulker has always had a bulletin board system (BBS) that you jr. skulkers could use to provide feedback and to discuss many topics with your fellow jr. skulkers. There is a link called "WebSkulker's BBS" at the left of every HTML issue and on the web site. Those of you jr. skulkers who tried this were probably disappointed because the software running it was hard to use. Our BBS is run by everyone.net, the same company that provides our free email system. We are pleased to announce that everyone.net has installed a totally new version of the BBS software which looks a lot better and is a lot easier to use, so we urge you all to try it out. There are very few messages on there right now because of the problems with the old version, but don't worry about that. Post lots of new messages on any topics you want, and hopefully others will respond. WebSkulker and Ms. Cat check the boards pretty often and respond when appropriate.
You can post messages anonymously, but the BBS works better if you register for a user name and password and use that when you leave messages. The registration system for the BBS user names is identical to the one used by our free email system, so if you already have a mailbox @webskulker.com, use that name for the BBS. If you sign up for the BBS first, remember that this also gives you a mailbox with the cool name firstname.lastname@example.org .
These two sites have nothing to do with each other except for some strange reason they both have "fish" in their domain names. Snapfish.com is one of those Internet startup companies that give things away for free hoping to sell advertising and other products. What snapfish gives away is free film developing and printing! You register with them and they will mail you the forms and envelopes for mailing your rolls of film (or disposable cameras) to them, or you can print out the forms from their site and mail rolls of film to them immediately.
will develop your pictures, scan them, put them into albums on their
web site which you can view online and share with your friends, print
them on Kodak paper, and mail the prints and negatives to you.
This is completely free, except for a shipping and handling charge of
$1.69 per roll. You can also add pictures to the online albums
by uploading pictures you already have scanned on your hard
drive. They make money by showing ads as you view the online
albums, and by selling you reprints and enlargements of the pictures.
Phonefish is now WebSkulker's favorite way to read email on his WAP-enabled cell phone. He tries every such WAP site he runs into, and this is the only one that really works. We know that very few of you jr. skulkers have such a phone so we won't say any more, but if you need this service, check this site out. If you don't know what WAP is, see these past issues of WebSkulker and go out and get yourself one!
Our 3/15/00 issue had an article about the Museum of Soviet Calculators. The author wrote to tell us that he has a new site called the Slide Rule Trading Post that you can see at the first link above. It has a lot of interesting pictures and information about slide rules suitable for people old enough to have used them, but at this point there doesn't seem to be any introductory material for you younger jr. skulkers.
The second link is the greatest Java applet WebSkulker has ever seen: a slide rule simulator. It is big and takes a while to download and start. When ready, it shows a picture of a slide rule. You can move the slide and the hairline with your mouse. When using a real slide rule, you usually get only a couple of digits of precision because you need to read the scales by eye. This simulator pops up a 17-digit number showing the readings!
