To lie or keep in hiding, as for some evil reason.  To move or go in a mean, stealthy manner.

Answer to the skulking contest

Before we begin, a brief note about the worldwide list of ISP's that we mentioned in yesterday's issue.  Jr. Skulker Diamond Dave works on part of a similar site at http://www.thedirectory.org  which claims to have 13,000 ISP's listed.  If you are looking for an ISP, check this one out as well as http://www.thelist.com that we mentioned yesterday; they both have their advantages.  TheDirectory also has a database of area code and prefix information that Dave maintains.

For you new subscribers, we had a contest this week which you can read about in Monday's issue.  The only winning entry was from Edison who got all three parts of the answer right.  The question was why this URL:
http://skulkers.rule@032176250231/%66a%71%2eh%74m%6c
would lead most browsers to the WebSkulker FAQ page which is normally reached by typing http://www.webskulker.com/faq.html

For the answer, read the article How to Obscure Any URL at:
http://www.nwi.net/~pchelp/obscure.htm
and you will learn that the "skulkers.rule", or anything to the left of an @ character in a URL, is completely ignored by web browsers.  Its purpose is to contain a userid and optionally a password for access to some types of protected sites.  The number 032176250231, since it starts with a zero, is interpreted by most web browsers as an octal (base 8) number and is the IP address for webskulker.com (209.249.80.153) converted to octal.  The
%66a%71%2eh%74m%6c at the end is a code for "faq.html".  Some of the letters are there, and the others are represented by two-digit hexadecimal numbers starting with %.

Skulking from a distance

http://www.eskimo.com/~joelm/tempest.html

"Across the darkened street, a windowless van is parked. Inside, an antenna is pointed out through a fiberglass panel. It's aimed at an office window on the third floor. As the CEO works on a word processing document, outlining his strategy for a hostile take-over of a competitor, he never knows what appears on his monitor is being captured, displayed, and recorded in the van below."

Is this really possible?  Read the Complete, Unofficial TEMPEST Information Page and see for yourself.

Skulking around the world

http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook

This site is probably not all that much different from the average atlas in that it has maps and details about countries.  The difference is that the World Factbook is published by the CIA and gives a lot of details about every country.

Jr. skulkers of any age might also want to check out the CIA's Home Page for Kids, if you can believe that concept:

Hard to skulk, because they don't exist

http://www.trailervision.com

"People say that they liked the trailer more than they liked the movie.  What if there was no movie?"  This site has fictional ads and streaming video trailers for movies that were never made.

This made WebSkulker laugh

Submitted by Jr. Skulker Ms. 1133

Miss Bea was in her 80's and much admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.  The pastor came to call on her one afternoon early in the Spring and she welcomed him into her Victorian parlor.  She invited him to have a seat while she prepared a little tea.  As he sat facing her old pump organ, the minister noticed a cut glass bowl setting on top of it, filled with water. In the water floated, of all things, a condom.

Imagine his shock and surprise.  Imagine his curiosity; surely Miss Bea had flipped!  But he certainly couldn't mention the strange sight in her parlor.  When she returned with tea and cookies they began to chat.  The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl and its strange floater, but soon it got the best of him, and he could resist no longer.  "Miss Bea," he said, "I wonder if you would tell me about this" pointing to the bowl.

"Oh, yes," she replied, "Isn't it wonderful! I was walking downtown last fall and I found this little package.  It said to put it on your organ and keep it wet, and it would prevent disease.  And you know, I think it's working, I haven't had a cold all winter!"
