We discussed the uReach system In the 9/16/1999 issue of WebSkulker.  We urge all you new jr. skulkers to read that issue and subscribe to uReach because they give you a toll-free voice mail number completely free, and it will in most cases give you the phone numbers of people who leave you voice messages, even if they block their caller ID.  We received email from uReach today saying that they now have a follow-me service similar to the one from CentreCom that we have discussed in the 10/5/1999 and 10/7/1999 issues.  You can program your uReach number to ask callers if they want to speak to you live, then uReach will ring the number you programmed to see if you answer and then connect you to the caller.  The CentreCom system is far more sophisticated and clearly the better choice, but CentreCom costs a lot more once the demo period is over.  uReach swears they will never have any monthly charges and they will give you the first 30 minutes of calls to your toll-free number per month free.  You never give them any money unless you exceed that usage.  Note that the follow-me service is billed at time and a half.

Jr. Skulker Batteryman saw our article in yesterday's issue about a shareware program that searches for MP3 files.  He suggested three other sites relating to MP3's.  The first is a search engine that looks for them on FTP sites:
http://www.palavista.com

The second is a good place for news about MP3's, software downloads, and music from independent artists:
http://www.mp3.com

Another site for MP3's by independent artists:
http://www.iuma.com

Broadcast your own skulks

http://www.shoutcast.com

http://www.shoutcast.com/download

Batteryman also suggested this site, but we won't give him credit because WebSkulker already knew about it and was planning to write about it.  Jr. Skulkers need to be kept in their place!

Shoutcast is a set of add-ons for the Winamp program that lets any jr. skulker with a Windows or Unix machine (not a Mac, of course) and a fast Internet connection broadcast a live radio station over the Internet that any Winamp user can pick up.   The material you broadcast can be a series of MP3 files and/or live audio from a microphone.  You can broadcast a live concert or play disk jockey and narrate in between songs.  The second link above gives pointers to detailed instructions on how to find who is broadcasting right now and use Winamp to receive their broadcasts, how to broadcast your own material to a Shoutcast server, and how to set up a Shoutcast server on your own machine.

Skulking the airwaves

http://www.winradio.com/home/download.htm

Jr. Skulker Mark Starr suggested this site.  The company manufactures a series of products they call WiNRADiO's, which are "police scanner" type radios on ISA cards that plug into a PC.  For a small extra price, they also have external models that plug into a serial port for use with a notebook computer.  To get a feel for these scanners, you can download and install the WR-1000/1500 software using the second link above.  When you start the program, it will look for the radio card.  Since you don't have one, it will go into a demo mode where you can play with all the controls.  WebSkulker bets that If you have ever used scanners, you will want to buy a WiNRADiO as soon as you see this run.  Warning: the prices start at around $500.  Hmmm, Christmas is coming up soon, isn't it?

As with all radio scanners, the U.S. version has the cellular telephone frequencies blocked, but the international version can be tuned to the cellular frequencies.  If an international version were to be brought into the U.S. it could be used to listen in on analog cellular calls, not digital ones, and this would be illegal and wrong.

Skulkers should never end up like this

http://www.atomfilms.com

Jr. Skulker Tristan Tom suggested this site.  "Atom acquires exclusive licenses to the world's best short films, animations, and digital media, and secures distribution via television networks, airlines, theaters, home video and DVD, the Internet, broadband services, and more."  Their web site contains an ever-changing selection of these works that you can view via Real Player G2 and Flash animations.

WebSkulker's favorite is an interactive animation called "Frog Bender 2000."  View it at:
http://www.atomfilms.com/films/default.asp?film_id=68
When you have heard enough of the frog's insults, start the blender running slowly by pressing the left button, then keep increasing the speed.

This made WebSkulker laugh

Submitted by Jr. Skulker Ms. 1133:

Dennis Rodman finds a bottle on the beach. He picks it up and suddenly a female genie appears. "Master, I may grant you one wish", says the genie.

"Hey, bitch... don't you know who I am.. I don't need no woman givin' me nuttin," yells Rodman.

The genie pleads, "But master I must grant you a wish or I will be returned to the bottle forever."

Dennis thinks for a moment... grumbles about the inconvenience and says, "Okay, okay... I wanna wake up with three women in my bed in the morning." Giving the genie an evil glare he says "Just do it, and leave me alone."

The genie, who was annoyed and hurt, says "So be it!" and disappears back into the bottle.

The next morning, Dennis wakes up with Lorena Bobbitt, Tanya Harding, and Hillary Clinton. His penis is gone, his leg is broken, and he has no health insurance.
